What to Expect When Enrolling in Covered California

If you’re reading this you’re likely interested in signing up for health insurance through Covered California, but probably have some questions. Don’t worry. We know it can be a bit confusing. Here at Sweeney and Sweeney we are ready and waiting to help you choose the perfect plan for you and your family.

See If You Qualify

Covered California offers a variety of coverage options and financial assistance programs. The first step is determining which of these programs you qualify for. Eligibility is based on your annual income and family size. A quick look at the following chart will tell us which options are available to you. Take a look for yourself and see where you fit.

qualifying chartDo you qualify for Medi-Cal? If so, this means you are eligible to receive free public health insurance through the county in which you live.

Do you qualify for financial help? If so, this means you are eligible to receive discounted rates on your insurance. In other words, the government will pay your health insurance provider a subsidy so that your monthly bill is lower. Depending on your income level, you may also get discounted rates on your out-of-pocket costs such as doctor’s visits, medication, lab work, etc.

If you don’t qualify for Medi-Cal or Federal Assistance, don’t fret. You can still purchase quality, affordable health insurance through Covered California.

Compare Your Coverage Options

This brings us to our next step: Choosing the best coverage option for your needs and budget.  If you don’t qualify for, or don’t wish to enroll in Medi-Cal, you will be asked to choose from one of four benefit levels. These levels are explained in the chart below. However, before checking it out, keep these tips in mind.

  • Platinum or Gold options are best for those who need a higher level of medical care. If you choose one of these levels you will pay more per month and less when you need medical services.
  • Silver and Bronze options are best for those in good health who require less medical care. If you choose one of these levels you will pay less per month, but more when you need medical services.
  • The minimum coverage plan is only available to people under the age of 30 or to individuals experiencing financial hardship. If you choose this plan, you will pay very little each month, but you can’t receive financial assistance to help you out.
